What should I do if my iPhone gets wet?

Switch it off and leave it off. Do not charge it, do not use a hairdryer and do not put it in rice. Dry the outside, keep it upright, and get the board cleaned as soon as you can — the hours immediately after a soaking decide more than the repair itself.

Why charging is the worst thing you can do

Water alone rarely destroys a board straight away. Current passing through wet, mineral-laden circuitry does: it shorts tracks and burns components that an ultrasonic clean could otherwise have saved. Every attempt to power it on or plug it in is another chance to lose the phone.

The same applies to 'it still works' — a wet phone that is running is still corroding. Back it up today and get it looked at.

Why rice is a myth

Rice absorbs a little ambient moisture and nothing else. It does not remove the salt from sea water, the chlorine residue from a pool or the sugar from a drink, and those residues are what keep eating the board. Meanwhile the delay is doing real damage.

Hairdryers and radiators are worse: heat drives moisture further under the shields and can warp adhesive and seals.

What happens at the bench

The phone is opened, the board is cleaned ultrasonically so residue comes out of the connectors and from under the shields, corrosion is treated, everything is dried, and then it is reassembled and tested. That work is charged from €99 as a non-refundable deposit because it takes the same effort whatever the result.

After the clean you get a straight report: working, these parts have failed and cost this much, or the board is beyond repair. No promises are made before it has been opened.
